Next morning we took off towards the Lost Mine Trail near the Chisos Mountain Basin. On our way there we saw beautiful flowers :)
I was the guide
There are about 70 different varieties of cacti in Big Bend and most of them were in bloom!
It really is one of the best trails in Big Bend!
the way going up
after a mile you reach the first overlook
and soon you are there, but first we needed to take a few pictures
Volker, Michaela, Sigrid and Harry - family time
the end of the Lost Mine Trail, just beautiful
a little too hazy for a good picture, but you get the idea
Volker took a short nap ;)
and then, suddenly, we saw it: Could it be? A hippo in the mountains of Big Bend? What do you think?
We all agreed, this was fun! ... and should Volker and I come here again, this will be repeated.
Big Bend is home to bears and mountain lions, but sightings are rare.
The loop trail only is 4.8 miles long, but begins at an elevation of 5600 feet and ascends
to 6850 feet. You hike mostly under pine, juniper and oak trees, a nice walk mostly in the shade. Also, a neat thing: at the trailhead you can get a guide to the plants, animals and geological formations seen in Big Bend. The trail is marked and each marker was a welcome stop to learn a thing or two about the area (it also is an excuse to rest :) I was the guide
