Brownsville can be boring. How many times have I heard that - and I agree. There is not much going on around here ... or is there?
Well, I can say one thing: If it is, it is not found in newspapers or heavily announced anywhere else.
As with most smaller places (although Brownsville isn't that small), most information is spread by word, and if you don't know the right people, well, too bad for you.
The recital of our friends daughter was such a thing. The Bellas Artes Academy presented its 35th annual Dance Festival at the Jacob Brown Auditorium. We were just lucky to get invited.
The motto was Ballett & Novelty, and the performers were between three and - my guess - under twenty years young.
So young, but they already have a huge fan club. At times the excitement was stronger than in any Broadway Show I have seen.There was yelling, whistling, waving and clapping after each performance. Especially the three-year-olds were adorable and brought a huge smile to my face. Some of them were so excited that they forgot to dance, but all of them knew how to leave the stage: waving like a royalty, throwing kisses and just being a little sassy.

We enjoyed the evening so much that we decided to see another show next day. Again, if we hadn't been invited the evening before, we never had known. It is only mentioned in the program which you get with your ticket.
This time it was more professional under the motto: Folklorico and Flamenco, Jazz, Tap and Ballroom.
The beginning made Polkas de Chihuahua, Veracruz, Chiapas and Guerrero, followed by some very nice Flamenco and I have never thought you can tap to Bolero de Ravel.
The BISD Ballroom Champions delivered a great performance. After the intermission it got more modern, yet the choreography was very enjoyable.
I am so glad I had a chance to see those kids and young adults dance. We had two great evenings.
I really think they could fill all 1200 seats in the auditorium easily. There are more people like us who just wait to hear about the interesting things that Brownsville has to offer.
