Volker and I have been to Germany for a while, in case you wondered, but now I am back to blogging.
While my poor husband was there on business, I enjoyed seeing family and friends. Time flies by and you wonder why you haven't taken any pictures. Well, I didn't, but yet I have something to show you. A highlight certainly was a trip to Poland, Warsaw to be specific.
With the ICE, the fast train, it still takes close to eight hours from Hanover to Warsaw, but it is much better than flying (which would take 7 hours by the way, including overlays).
Warsaw is the capital and biggest city in Poland, located at the Vistula river and a mix between modern and historic city. The center was widely destroyed during the war but has been rebuild. Warsaw still is a big construction site, but at least they have taken the opportunity to connect the need of modern with the old.
In addition it is a very green city, many parks invite you to relax and enjoy your day.
After a long day of walking around you might enjoy a good meal, and if there is one thing to do well it is eating - delicious traditional dishes for a very reasonable price.
The season for chantarelles (a certain kind of wild mushroom) had begun, and since they grow here natively, this was a "must" on our menu.
Appetizer or main dish? Don't ask, just give it to me! Yum!!! :)

Our hotel was near Old Town, very convenient for discovering this part of Warsaw.
The road leads you directly to old town, but before you get there you pass by a beautiful church, St. Anne.
We got there in time and attended an organ concert - magnificent!
The market square in Warsaw is a great place to discover the beauty of this city in detail.

For example this one. We had met a young woman in the train who had told us about it and recommended we take a peek inside. So worth it! Just look!
Two artists painted on these walls for two years every day. Each room is different.
Warsaw is located at both sides to the Vistula river. Its coat of armor is a mermaid which you can find throughout the city in numerous places. If you wonder why a mermaid and why it has a sword, read HERE
The first thing you will notice are the houses in Old Town. Each one is different.
Warsaw and Chopin belong to each other. I didn't make it inside, but here is the museum.
Besides all the historic buildings you shouldn't forget that Warsaw is a huge city, modern too. The contrast sometimes is striking. Would you expect such a mural next to Chopin?
This is the palace of culture and science, the highest building in Poland. Even though it looks nice, the Polish people do not like it very much. It was a "gift" from Stalin, they say, and they rather not remember the past. Inside you will find (movie) theaters and museums, but I was interested in something else. There is a viewing platform on the 30. floor with a great view over the city.

Warsaw has to offer a lot of things, but being to a scientist, there was one place we needed to check out: The Copernicus Science center.

coming back to the hotel we could enjoy a stroll through one of the many parks.
There is so much to do and see in Warsaw, not only the center, but it is definitely a good start. If there only would be a chance to travel east more often.
